How much is sixteen dollars an hour per year?
If you have found a job that pays 16 dollars an hour that you’re thinking about taking on, and you’re wondering how much money you will be making, we will break it down for you in this post.
How much will you make per year on a 16 dollar an hour salary?
If you take a standard 40 hour work week into this example, then we can calculate how much money you will make in a year for a 16 dollar an hour salary.
To calculate this we take 40 (hours per week) multiplied by 52 (weeks in a year).
This gives us a total of 2,080 work hours per year.
Then we will take the 2,080 work hours in a year and multiply that by 16, which is our dollar per hour.
The total of that comes out to $33,280.
16 dollars an hour is $33,280 a year
40 hour work week x 52 weeks in a year = 2,080 work hours x 16 dollars an hour = $33,280
However, a 40 hour week isn’t always an option. Some places consider full-time at 32 working hours per week. So, let’s calculate how much 32 hours worked per week comes out to.
We will start with calculating the hours again. This time, 32 hours per week worked multiplied by 52 weeks in a year comes out to 1,664 hours worked in one year.
Then, we take the 1,664 hours worked, and we multiply that by 16 (dollars per hour).
That comes out to a total of $26,624.
Then let’s take a part-time number of hours. Part-time work usually hovers around 20 hours per week.
We multiply 20 times 52 to get our work hours per year.
That comes out to 1,040.
Then the 1,040 gets multiplied by 16 (dollars per hour) and that totals 16,640 dollars in one year.
These are the numbers of how much you will make per year on a 16 dollars an hour salary broken down into different hours worked per week.
Of course, keep in mind the amount you earn will also depend on days taken off of work and the exact amount of hours you work which might come out to a little less than we have calculated.
However, with these numbers you can still get an approximate idea of how much you will be earning per year.
Also, you will need to keep in mind taxes which will be taken out of that yearly salary which we will cover in a later section.
Work Hours In A Year | Total Earned
40 Hours A Week | 2,080 | $33,280 |
32 Hours A Week | 1,664 | $26,624 |
20 Hours A Week | 1,040 | $16,640 |
How much is 16 dollars an hour for 40 hours a week?
Let’s go more in depth about the 40 hours work week. As we have calculated above, 40 hours a week multiplied by 52 weeks in a year gives you 2,080 work hours in a year.
After we multiplied by 16 dollars an hour that gave us a total of $33,280 a year.
However, it is more realistic that sometimes we will be sick, sometimes there are holidays that we won’t be working and sometimes, the manager just doesn’t schedule you for a full 40 hours a week even if really close.
So, let’s lower the amount of hours from 2,080 to an even 2,000, which is two weeks off. This way if you do work less than 40 hours per week this will slightly reflect that.
Once we calculate 2,000 by 16 dollars an hour, that comes out to an even $32,000 per year.
That’s not a big difference from our previous number but it will help you be a little more realistic.
What if you have the option to work some overtime at your job?
Twenty additional hours of overtime a month is reasonable to assume if you work in a busy place.
We already know there are 2,080 hours in a year for 40 hours. Twenty additional hours per month multiplied by 12 months in a year is equal to 240 additional hours.
Add the 240 additional hours to the 2,080 hours for a normal 40 hour work week and you get 2,320 hours.
If you work 2,320 hours at 16 dollars an hour, you will make 37,120 dollars.
That puts you really close to the 40,000 dollar mark just by working 20 extra hours a month.
Hours Worked A Year | Total Earned
40 Hours A Week | 2,080 | $33,280 |
Two Weeks Off | 2,000 | $32,000 |
20 Hours Overtime A Month | 2,320 | $37,120 |
How much is $16 an hour for 32 hours a week?
Many places hire full-time but only guarantee 32 hours a week as a full-time job. In this case, our previously calculated number still stands. For 32 hours per week, that comes out to $26,624.
32 (hours per week) x 52 (weeks in a year) = 1,664 x 16 (dollars per hour) = $26,624.
Now, we will take off two weeks worth of hours for the days you might miss at work.
That is 32 x 2 = 64 and then subtract it from 1,664 which equals 1600 hours.
Then we will multiply 1600 hours by 16 dollars per hour and we get 25,600 dollars.
If you normally work 32 hours a week but are able to put in 20 extra hours a month, that is an extra 20 x 12 = 240 hours worked.
Add the 240 to the 1,664 hours we have already calculated and you get 1,904 hours.
The 1,904 hours worked multiplied by 16 dollars per hour comes out to $30,464.
By working 20 hours overtime per month you will get just over 30,000 dollars.
Hours Worked A Year | Total Earned
32 Hours Per Week | 1,664 | $26,624 |
Two Weeks Off | 1,600 | $25,600 |
20 Overtime Hours A Month | 1,904 | $30,464 |
How much is $16 an hour for 20 hours a week?
If you got a part-time job working 20 hours per week, then here is the breakdown.
We established that a 20 hour work week would come out to $16,640.
So what does that look like if you take two weeks off?
Two weeks off is a total of 40 work hours off, so subtract that from your total hours for the year.
That gives you 1,000 hours worked in the year. Multiply that by 16 hours worked and you get $16,000 in a year.
If you are hired for 20 hours a week but have the opportunity to work overtime, let’s assume again 20 extra hours of overtime per month.
Multiply 20 x 12 and you get 240. Then add 240 to 1,040 which comes out to 1,280. The hours 1,280 multiplied by 16 is a total of $20,480.

How much is a 16 dollar an hour salary every two weeks?
If you’d like to break it down into every two weeks, which is how often many places pay, then all you need to do is divide the monthly totals in half, or multiply by 2 where we multiplied by 4 to get a monthly salary.
A 40 hour work week will come out to (40x2x16) $1280.
A 32 hour work week will come out to (32x2x16) $1,024.

How much is 16 dollars an hour salary per day?
Finding yourself trying to calculate how much money you will make during your work day?
A 40 hour work week is an 8 hour day (40/5) and with a pay of 16 dollars an hour that is a total of $128 (8×16) for the day.
That will change depending on how many hours per week and per day you work.
A 20 hour work week spread evenly throughout the week would be a 4 hour day which is $64 per day.

You also will pay $1,393.96 for social security which leaves you with a take-home pay of $29,651.94.
Since we have calculated a 32 hour work week, we will run through the numbers of that as well.
The gross pay comes out to $26,624. The federal income tax deducted is $1,435.38 and social security deducted is $1,297.45 which brings the take-home pay to $23,891.17.
A part-time job would look a little different. For 20 hours a week your gross pay would have been $16,640.
For federal taxes you only pay $369 dollars for the year, however, you do still pay $1,152.68 for social security.

Is 16 dollars an hour a good, livable wage?
While $16 an hour might be a good wage for some, even a great wage for teenagers, however, it might not be enough for a growing family.
It is possible to make it work, though, if you split rent with someone and live very frugally.
That will definitely require living by a budget to know where your money is going.
The bottom line
Since the minimum wage of $15 dollars an hour is quickly becoming the standard, $16 dollars an hour is actually a pretty good wage, considering it is higher than the minimum.
